We are excited to welcome Rob Yates, Ella Podmore MBE and Beth Elliot from supercar manufacturer McLaren Automotive to our William Kennish campus to share their experience of getting into and working in the fast-paced and exciting engineering industry. They'll also be bringing a McLaren supercar with them for visitors to get up-close with (a lucky few may even get the opportunity to sit inside).

About Robert

Robert is a Body Engineering Project Manager at McLaren Automotive who originally hails from the Isle of Man. Having completed his secondary education at St Ninian’s High School, Robert completed a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Automotive Engineering at Huddersfield University before working for car brand Vauxhall. Having worked for McLaren since 2012, Robert is passionate about cars and is proud to work for a company which makes some of the most exciting and technologically advanced cars in the world.

About Ella

As a Senior Materials engineer at McLaren Automotive, Ella is responsible for all metallic-related investigations across all projects of the business, specialising in surface treatments and microscopic metallic analysis, and has been at the company for nearly 6 years.

Ella has a Masters of Materials Engineering at University of Manchester, has won IET’s Young Woman Engineer of the Year 2020, been named Surrey’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2022 and more recently received an MBE in Her Majesty The Queen’s Birthday Honours List for contributions to engineering, innovation and diversity. On top of her usual duties Ella is an advocate for women in engineering and frequently talks to students about the career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Her aim is to inspire the next generation to make an impact whilst showcasing that science and engineering is for everyone.

About Beth

Beth is a Graduate Engineer at McLaren Automotive in the powertrain department. She studied General Engineering (Mechanical) at the University of Sheffield for 5 years, finishing with a Masters. This included a year in industry at Parker Hannifin Ltd as a design engineer, helping to design new products, make prototypes, and test parts in the laboratory.

She joined the Graduate Scheme at McLaren Automotive straight from University, and has been with the company for more than a year. In this time, she has worked in various teams within the powertrain department to broaden her knowledge on the individual systems and the roles available in the industry. 

Who is this event open to?

This event is open to students/school pupils aged 14+ who are interested in or considering a career in Engineering. Parents/carers can drop off their young person or can wait in the foyer with a cup of tea.

There is a maximum of 40 spaces available.

Event format

  • 5.30pm - welcome from the Awareness of Careers in Engineering team
  • 5.35pm - presentation from Robert & Ella
  • 6pm - visitors are split into two groups. Group 1 will have a tour of the car with Robert & Ella while Group 2 have opportunity to meet employers.
  • 6.15pm - groups switch. Group 2 will have a tour of the car with Robert & Ella while Group 1 have opportunity to meet employers.
  • 6.30pm - event end

When completing your registration on eventbrite, please click “yes” if you consent to your photos to be used for marketing purposes - anyone under the age of 16 will need parental permission. Those who select “no” will not be photographed, in order to enable us to distinguish those individuals, they will be given a red lanyard.
