Level 1 Landscaping and Conservation

What is the Course About?

This qualification is for anyone interested in a horticultural, agriculture or conservation as a career. You may be just starting out, or taking a break from a job to get some valuable training Gain the practical knowledge and skills you need to work in the landscaping or environmental sector. You will learn at College and gain practical experience that will give you an edge in the world of work.

What subjects will I study?

The course is broken down into units and includes but not restricted to:

  • Personal qualities (mandatory)

  • Understanding the land-based industry (mandatory)

  • Lay turf by hand

  • Maintain wooden structures with water-based preservative

  • Determine soil pH with colour indicator test kit under supervision

  • Prune hedges by hand

  • Grow vegetable crops under supervision

  • Build a hit and miss fence in a simulated environment

  • Plant a shrub or tree with a tree shelter

  • Lay a block paving on sand under supervision

  • Set a right angle on the ground

  • Use a leaf-blower

  • Use a mower

  • Lay a wooden deck under supervision

  • Erect a strained wire fence

  • Carry out habitat management

  • Repair and maintenance of hand tools

  • Mix and lay concrete on sub-base under supervision

What are my progression and career options?

Successful completion of this course will assist you in progressing into employment in either horticulture, agriculture, environmental protection, groundwork or Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture.

How will I be assessed?

The course commences in September. Each unit is split into practical and theory elements. Achievement is based upon continuous assessment, which is carried out throughout the year and is unit based.

Entry requirements

No formal requirements but you will need really keen interest in working outdoors and a clear commitment to the course.

You are encouraged to make an application to College as soon as practicable. Please include a copy of your GCSE results/expected grades where possible.

You will be required to undertake an aptitude test as part of the application process.
