‘Whose island is this anyway?’: poetry, possession and being possessed by the Isle of Man

Dr Mari Hughes-Edwards will be discussing the ways in which islands and island houses and ruins in particular, are constructed in the work of some contemporary poets who often write about the Isle of Man. They include Simon Maddrell, Janet Lees, Annie Kissack and Paul Lebiedzinski. In particular, Maddrell’s poem The Whole Island, which inspires this paper’s title, will be examined. Maddrell’s Throatbone (2020) and Lees’ House of Water (2018) will also be explored in the context of wider Manx poetry.
