UCM Sports Students Challenged by Professional Footballer

Professional footballer Liam Doyle and FC Isle of Man’s top goal scorer Sean Doyle visited University College Isle of Man’s (UCM) sports students to inspire and put them through their paces.

The students studying for their Level 3 Extended Diploma in Football Studies, gained an insight into what it takes to be a professional footballer and his coaching advice during a 90 minute session with Liam at the bowl.

Liam, who played as a defender for San Antonio FC in the USL Championship, heralded from St Marys AFC in Douglas and played for the Isle of Man’s national team in 2010. He made the move to professional football in 2016 in America.

Within his session with 10 UCM students, Liam challenged them to concentrate on their body stance when receiving a pass in relation to where they next want to play the ball, and focusing on attacking principles within a game.

The students also took part in a Q and A session with FC Isle of Man’s in form striker Sean Doyle, getting an insight into Sean’s experiences, how he has developed as a player and what it takes to reach the level he has.

John Lund, Sport Lecturer at UCM, commented: “We’re so pleased that Liam and Sean could join our students. It was a fantastic experience for them and they all got so much out of the sessions. It was really inspiring for them to see home-grown talent flying the flag for the Isle of Man all around the world and having such a successful career in something they’re so passionate about.

UCM’s Football Studies course is delivered in partnership with FC Isle of Man.
