UCM (University College Isle of Man) is celebrating the expertise of adult learning lecturer Tony Cain, whose innovative research is bringing a fresh academic perspective on the Isle of Man TT.
Born and raised on the Island, Tony studied for 18 months as a PhD researcher with the University of Gloucestershire, exploring the TT from a philosophical and cultural viewpoint and examining why riders and spectators continue to be drawn to one of the world’s most iconic sporting events. Investigating the meaning, identity and value individuals attach to the TT, his work considers themes such as freedom, courage and the pursuit of excellence.
Tony said: “The TT is a unique existential event. It combines beauty, challenge and risk. It offers a powerful insight into human motivation and experience.”
Building on earlier research into TT memorabilia and community, his studies draw on philosophical ideas such as agon (struggle) and arete (excellence). He will soon bring this expertise into the classroom through a new adult learning course at UCM.
Tony added: “My journey with the TT started in childhood, attending races with my father. Now I’m able to combine that personal connection with academic research and share it with others.”
