What is the Course About?

The EPQ is an A-level standard, standalone qualification designed to extend and develop your abilities beyond and prepare you for university or your future career. It can be taken as an extension of other Level 3 qualifications or vocational qualifications. It's worth half an A-level in terms of UCAS points. It's recognised by universities and employers.

In practical terms, the EPQ is an extended exercise using in-depth research and analysis, based around a topic of your choosing with a large focus on independent learning. EPQ has been designed so that you can choose an area that either extends or expands on your previous studies, or a topic that you have a personal interest in or passion for. You will be required to attend lessons for the underpinning skills and knowledge. You will then receive regular support from your supervisor/assessor whilst you complete your Project independently.

How useful is the qualification to me?

The EPQ will allow you to learn more about an area that interests you, and:

• develop skills

• allow you to get more UCAS points (up to a maximum of 28 points)

• teach you skills that will help in higher education or the workplace

• allow you to research a subject that might not be available through other qualifications

• develop independent research and project management skills.

What will my EPQ Project entail?

The qualification requires you to identify, plan, and carry out an independent research project over 120 hours. Tutor support will include one hour a week of research, project management, and presentation skills as well as one-to-one supervision. However, the projects themselves must be substantially self-led.

Classes will include sessions on how to conduct research, project management, self-reflection, and academic writing, among other things.

The course will run over approximately 24 weeks, with submissions due around Easter (final schedule to be confirmed). In addition to the taught element, you will have access to tutorial support for your project. Tutorials will be arranged with you at set points during the course.

When will taught classes be held?

You will be required to attend a single taught class every week. Once you have enrolled, you will be allocated to either the Tuesday evening class (6pm-8pm) or the Wednesday evening class (4:30pm-6:30pm). If you are only available at one of these times, please note this on you enrollment form.

Classes will begin the week of 14th September.
