Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management

What is the Course About?

This Level 3 course blends hands on practical experience with essential theoretical knowledge to prepare you for further study or a career in the animal industry.

You’ll explore eight core units designed around the real skills, behaviours and expertise employers look for in the animal sector. These include:

• Animal Breeding and Genetics

• Animal Biology

• Animal Nutrition

• Animal Health and Disease

• Animal Behaviour

• Ecology and Conservation

• Practical Animal Husbandry

• Business Management in the Animal Sector

Alongside these key units, you’ll dive into specialised areas such as zoo animal management, farm animal care, and the pet and rescue industry.

A major part of the course is gaining real world experience. You’ll complete work placements with a range of organisations, helping you develop practical animal care skills and complete a research project inspired by your placement work.

Will I need a DBS check for this course?

Yes. Our Employability Skills Coordinator will help you complete this once you have started your course.

Will I need any specific resources, uniform and/or kit?

Yes. Most placements take place from November through March/early April, so you’ll need clothing and PPE suitable for winter and outdoor environments. Required items include:

• UCM Animal Management Hoodie – purchased at enrolment

• Waterproof trousers

• Waterproof/winter jacket

• Steel-toe capped boots

• Wellingtons or muck boots

What are the days and hours of the course?

Your timetable will be confirmed during induction in September, but you can expect approximately 18 hours of time in the classroom or on a work placement per week (plus time for self-study and completing assignments).

Will I undertake work placement as part of the course?

Yes, a minimum of 150 hours is required by students to complete in their first academic year.

What are my progression and career options?

This qualification can earn up to 168 UCAS points which gives a sound basis to progress to a related Higher Education programme or to apply for work in an animal focussed industry such as:

•Animal technician in an animal breeding or research organisation

•Animal welfare centre manager

•Pet store manager

•Animal nutritionist

•Kennel or cattery manager

•Rescue centre manager

•Assistant zookeeper

•Animal officer/inspector

•Livestock manager

How will I be assessed?

You’ll be assessed through a mix of external exams set by the awarding body and internal assessments. These may include:

• Written assignments

• Presentations

• Practical assessments

• Recorded evidence

You will also complete a practical portfolio documenting your work placement experience.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at C or above (or equivalent) including English language, Maths and a Science.
