Personal wellbeing

UCM’s two Student Welfare Officers (SWOs) are based in the Student Services Centre. Students can make appointments to speak to them in confidence about anything they may be upset or worried about.

The SWOs can also help students with issues such as:

  • managing stress or anger
  • gaining a work-life balance
  • exam worries
  • building confidence
  • managing bereavement
  • time management
  • health issues.

Appointments with a SWO can be made personally or via a tutor and whilst the SWOs are based at Homefield Road, they maintain a weekly presence on other campuses and can meet with students there too.

SWOs also provide a key advocacy role for students and can assist with communication between students, parents and tutors. The SWOs also liaise with a number of outside agencies on students’ behalf and are available during the summer.

The SWOs regularly help students in their transition from high school to College by offering practical and emotional support throughout the summer period.

The SWOs also take a proactive approach to boosting resilience and promoting emotional well-being and during a student’s time with us at UCM, they will be offered the opportunity to attend a variety of tutorials and workshops which offer information, advice, techniques and strategies.
