This hands-on course provides you with the essential skills and knowledge needed to further a career in bricklaying within the construction industry.
By completing this course, you will gain more confidence in tackling more advanced tasks and assessments with a professional standard of work. You will learn a combination of practical techniques and theoretical principles, focusing on solid walling, setting out of masonry structures, and cavity walling. What subjects/units/modules* will I study?
The course is broken down into units and includes:
• Principles of building construction, information and communication
• Producing thin joint masonry and masonry cladding
• Building solid walling, isolated and attached piers
• Interpreting working drawings to set out masonry structures
• Construct cavity walling forming masonry structures
• Health, safety and welfare in construction

The course commences in September. Each unit is split into practical and theory elements, with each element taking up approximately 50% of the day. Self-study is part of the course and you will also be set written assignments that will require some research and time management. All units have a practical and theory exam, both of which must be successfully completed in order to progress through the course.
The apprenticeship framework is delivered over 3 years. To progress onto Level 3 you will need to be employed as an apprentice.
Students that do not meet the required milestones will not progress onto the next level of qualification.
Will I need a DBS check for this course?
No
Will I need any specific resources, uniform and/or kit?
Working clothes, safety boots and a copy of The City & Guilds Textbook: Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying.
What are the days and hours of the course?
You will attend college one day per week, where a minimum attendance rate of 90% is expected. You are also required to attend three block weeks. Your full timetable will be provided in September.
Will I undertake work experience as part of the course?
It is required to have employment for undertaking this level 2 course. It is the responsibility of the learners to seek employment. Tutors will be able to provide useful advice in your employment journey.

Successful completion of this course will assist you in progressing onto Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying.
How will I be assessed?
Four multiple-choice theory exams. All practical assessments will be carried out within the UCM workshops.
Entry requirements
You will need to have successfully achieved Level 1 bricklaying. Additionally, you will need to be employed by a relevant employer and registered with the Department of Education, Sport & Culture (tel: 682379).
