What is the Course About?

The Construction industry, which contributes 6% of GDP, is vital to the provision and maintenance of the property and infrastructure required for the Island's continued economic growth. In light of the current economic climate it is more essential than ever to gain skills and qualifications in this area, to improve future prospects and job progression.

This qualification is designed to meet the requirements of today’s Construction Industry and give you the necessary skills and competences to work effectively.

The course is practical and work-related. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. The course is recognised nationally and internationally as a progression towards professional opportunities within the construction industry. The qualification is approved by the CITB and RICS, the mark of quality which will support students into employment and as they progress throughout their careers.

Will I need a DBS check for this course?

No

Will I need any specific resources, uniform and/or kit?

You will be informed at the commencement of your course in September of any textbooks or site appropriate clothes you may need during the year. A course specific handbook, which you can purchase or borrow from the Hive, can be found on the BTEC website:

What are the days and hours of the course?

You will receive a confirmed timetable during your induction week in September. You will be expected to attend one full day per week commencing at 09.00 until 20.00. Breaks are provided throughput the day. 90% attendance rate is required by all students.

Will I undertake work experience as part of the course?

There is no required work experience as part of the course, however, if you do have a position in a construction related job then this would support your learning. If you do not work in a construction related job, this may impact your ability to apply for course fee funding support.

What are my progression and career options?

Satisfactory completion of the course will allow you to continue your studies at Higher National Certificate and employment or gain entry to a degree course.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by a blend of examinations, coursework, laboratory reports and projects. Self-study is a fundamental part of the course and you will also be set assignments that will require extensive research and time management.

You will have to demonstrate that they can meet a high level of numeracy and literacy, which are integral to this course

Entry requirements

Three GCSE’s at grade C including Maths and English. Alternatively applications from experienced construction operatives will be considered on their own merit. Students who gain entry via GCSE qualifications may be required to complete additional study. All students will undertake an entry assessment during enrolment week.
