Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management

What is the Course About?

What subjects/units/modules* will I study?

A Level 3 course that contains both practical and theoretical elements that equips students to either progress to higher education or to work in the animal related industries.

Eight units of the qualification are mandatory and relate directly to the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected by employers in a range of industries involving animals. The areas that the qualification will cover include:

• Animal Breeding and Genetics

• Animal Biology

• Animal Nutrition

• Animal Health and Disease

• Animal Behaviour

• Ecology and Conservation

• Practical Animal Husbandry

• Business Management in the Animal Sector

There are also units that cover industry specific topics such as zoo animal management, farm animal management and the pet & rescue industry. Students will also be required to undertake work experience at a number of different placements where they will gain practical experience of working with and caring for animals alongside a practical research project partly based upon their work placement.

Will I need a DBS check for this course?

Yes

Will I need any specific resources, uniform and/or kit?

Most of our placements will be hosted between November to the end of March/ beginning of April, and therefore winter/ weather appropriate clothing & PPE will need to be purchased before the first placement in November.

What are the days and hours of the course?

Timetables are issued during Induction in September, but roughly 18 hours contact time per week is required of this course.

Will I undertake work experience as part of the course?

Yes, a minimum of 150 hours is required by students to complete in their first academic year.

What are my progression and career options?

This qualification can earn up to 168 UCAS points which gives a sound basis to progress to a related Higher Education programme or to apply for work in an animal focussed industry such as:

•Animal technician in an animal breeding or research organisation

•Animal welfare centre manager

•Pet store manager

•Animal nutritionist

•Kennel or cattery manager

•Rescue centre manager

•Assistant zookeeper

•Animal officer/inspector

•Livestock manager

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed by both external examinations set by the awarding body and internal assessments. Internal assessment uses a variety of methods such as written assignments, presentations, practical assessments and recordings.

Students will be required to fill in a practical portfolio, evidencing their placements.

4 GCSEs at C or above or equivalent including English language, Maths and a Science.
