What is the Course About?

We offer a range of maths courses for people who would like an up-to-date, recognised qualification in this subject or the opportunity to improve general understanding and skills.

Examples of the courses we offer include:

GCSE Maths

This course runs from September to June and we offer both daytime and evening options. Please note places are limited.

Example course topics include:

• Numbers and the number system

• Equations, formulae and identities

• Sequences, functions and graphs

• Geometry and trigonometry

• Vectors and transformation geometry

• Statistics and probability

Specification - Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Mathematics (Specification A) (4MA1)

This course will be offered on a part-time basis of three hours per week - at the following times:

• Tuesday evening at 6pm - 9pm

• Wednesday evening at 6pm - 9pm

Wednesday 10am-1pm

• Friday 10am-1pm

Level 2 Functional Skills Maths

This course runs from October to late January and also February to late May and will be offered on a part-time basis of two hours per week – Tuesday 10am-12pm Please note places are limited.

Entry requirements for employment, higher-level study and training opportunities, often include GCSE Maths or equivalent; Functional Skills Maths Level 2 usually meets this requirement. It is, however, recommended that all applicants check the specific entry requirements for their intended progression.

Example course topics include:

  • Using numbers and the number system – whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages

  • Using common measures, shapes and space

  • Handling information and data

Specification – Pearson Edexcel Level 2 Functional Skills Maths

Level 1 Functional Skills Maths

This course runs from October to late May and will be offered on a part-time basis of two hours per week – Wednesday 6-8pm. Please note places are limited.

Example course topics include:

  • Using numbers and the number system – whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages

  • Using common measures, shapes and space

  • Handling information and data

Specification – Pearson Edexcel Level 1 Functional Skills Maths

Community Maths

We also offer basic maths sessions to adults who wish to improve their skills with numeracy.

Sessions are held at Douglas, Castletown, Peel and Ramsey. Please note that the exact days, times and locations and to be confirmed.

Entry requirements

You must be 16 or over as of 1st September 2025 to enrol on this course

To apply for a maths course we will need to assess your current level of knowledge to ensure that the course is appropriate for you.

The placement assessment is all part of the service to ensure that students are given the best possible opportunity to develop new skills and succeed.

In some cases we may recommend that you attend our community maths sessions to upskill with a view to future progression onto one of our qualification based courses.

The maths assessment is completed online at UCM. You will be asked a series of short maths questions and it takes around 45 minutes.
