BTEC Level 2 Technical Occupational Entry in Leading Community Activity (Diploma)

What is the Course About?

This is a one-year full-time course that is equivalent to four GCSEs.

This course is designed to help students grow in confidence and learn how to carry out key tasks in the community activity industry at an entry level. Along the way, they’ll develop valuable skills like communication, organisation, reliability and inclusiveness, along with the professional behaviours needed to work effectively with others. Students will also learn about best practice and core values such as teamwork, safety, safeguarding, and equality, helping them work safely, responsibly and in line with industry expectations. The qualification gives learners a recognised stepping‑stone towards their next career move, aligns with CIMSPA professional standards, and offers employers clear evidence that students are ready to begin work within the sport and physical activity sector.

You will also have the opportunity to:

Develop your activity leadership skills in a practical & professional settings

Engage in work experience opportunities with key sporting stakeholders on the Island such as Manx Sport and Recreation

Prepare yourself for a successful career in the sports sector

Work collaboratively to lead a community activity or event

What modules will I study?

Over the one year you will study four mandatory modules:

Working in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry

Roles and Responsibilities of a Community Activity Leader

Planning and Promoting Community Activity

Working as a Community Activity Leader

If your first choice course is popular, we’ll let you know and ask if you would like us to process your second choice course as well. This doesn’t mean you won’t be considered for your first choice it just provides you with a back-up plan.

International/UK Applicants

If you are an international/UK applicant someone from UCM will contact you remotely. It is essential that you have uploaded copies of your results/ certificates and relevant translations of grades/ certificates. Please note, if you are an international applicant and your application is received later than the end of May (i.e. three months before the start of the academic year) we will not be able to process it as the immigration processes would exceed the timescale required to start in September.

Will I need a DBS check for this course?

Yes, you must pass a DBS check, this will be provided by UCM.

Will I need any specific resources, uniform and/or kit?

UCM branded Nike kit is a requirement for the practical elements on this course. All students will need to purchase at least 1 x red Nike Academy T-shirt and 1 x red Nike Academy long sleeve top, although additional kit is available. This can be purchased from any retailer but will need to be branded at Promenade T-Shirts (approx. £80.00).

What are the days and hours of the course?

The specific timetable will be provided during the induction day, however the time in college is usually equivalent to 2.5 days per week. There will also be additional time for students who need to complete GCSE/L2 Functional Skills English or Maths.

Will I undertake work experience as part of the course?

Yes, work experience and placements are a requirement of this course.

What are my progression and career options?

Upon completion of this course you may seek employment in the sport industry by taking on a range of roles including: Community Activity Leaders, Community Activator Coach, Sports Activity Leader, Youth Activity Leader, Leisure Centre Assistant.

Successful completion of this course with a Merit profile will allow for progression onto Level 3 courses, such as our Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching & Development.

How will I be assessed?

A combination of coursework, projects and practical observation. There are no exam units on this course.
