about this course:

The Beginner’s Spanish course is made up of two 10-week courses, one during the Autumn Term, the second during the Spring Term. It is possible for new students to start in January 2026 if they already have some Spanish or are happy to spend a little time catching up with the language learnt during the previous term.
These two ten week courses are for absolute beginners or students who would like to build their confidence by starting again from scratch. We follow the structure of the BBC Talk Spanish Book 1. By the end of the first 10 weeks, you will have learned how to introduce yourself, say a little about who you are, what you do and, just as important, to start understanding what Spanish people say in reply. By the end of the second ten week course, you should be able to find your way around Spanish towns, use public transport, and enjoy Spanish hospitality with and without help from google.

about this course:

This course will offer an exciting journey of discovery, as we explore particular locations in terms of ancestral belief systems, identity and attachment. What connected our forefathers ( some dating back thousands of years) to particular places? How did patterns of belief, via ritual and symbolism, connect people to specific localities? To what extent was a wider cosmology a significant factor in favouring certain places? In particular, we shall consider the monumental megaliths of the Neolithic (New Stone Age) period, the keeills (early stone chapels), the holy wells and also that uniquely liminal (boundary) space where land meets sea. By the end of the course the student should have developed a wider appreciation of the rich tapestry of sites that exist within our Island shores; secondly, how such venues might be interpreted within a wider cosmological and spiritual dimension; and thirdly, how the knowledge acquired may stimulate the student's desire to seek out particular locations, thus becoming intimately connected in a personal and unique way, and generating a thirst for greater learning within the subject area.

The course is targeted at providing the casual Manx stargazer, who wants to know more about the basics of astronomy, the opportunity to learn how to identify the planets, constellations, and other objects in the sky. The course also looks in detail at the human exploration of the cosmos using manned and automatic spacecraft.
The Manx night skies are amongst the darkest and best in Europe. With little light pollution we can observe many fascinating objects including the Milky Way, which unlike urban areas on the adjacent Isles can be clearly seen on dark moonless Manx nights. This course is aimed at the beginner or the enthusiastic amateur or anyone who has looked up at the night sky with wonder and questions.
The course may include visits to places of astronomical significance on the Island and sessions if the sky is clear, may be held outside to enable students to see the objects visible that night for themselves. Tutor: Mr H Parkin

about this course:

If you’ve learned any Spanish before, you probably focused on learning the “stuff” of the language – grammar, vocab, maybe pronunciation.
Which makes sense. That’s obviously the first step.
But what good is all of that info if you can’t use it in real conversations with Spanish speakers?
If every time you go to form a new sentence, you are racking your brain for the right sentence structure, the right conjugation, that word you can never remember, then you have a problem.
Your goal is to have natural conversations with real people… Right?
Then you not only need to learn the grammar and vocab, but become confident using it.
And the only way to become confident having conversations in Spanish is to have lots of conversations in Spanish. . The more you speak and have fun, the easier it is for you to understand- I teach conversational Spanish in my Spanish for beginners course, with no complicated rules or grammar. When you Speak to Learn Spanish, it becomes real and functional!

about this course:

For centuries much of the Island’s population has been rural – living in the various villages or scattered across the island in often isolated farms and cottages. For many people it was a subsistence life, without enough land to support a family, so they were often labouring on local farms, going to the fishing or maybe working in the mines as well. Discover more about how people earned a living, put food on the table and a roof over their head (and what was under that roof).
Discover how people celebrated, commemorated (and protected themselves) through the year and throughout their lives at both home and at work (whether on land or sea). When life could be so precarious and one bad harvest (either of crops or at the fishing) could be disastrous, people would do whatever it took to keep their good luck. So find out about the different ways people could try to ensure good luck, prevent bad luck, but also importantly have fun (a lot of folklore is about having fun... particularly for young people!).

about this course:

Spanish Level 1 - for absolute beginners, or if your knowledge is limited/rusty and you wish to build your confidence for holidays, work or fun.
New students welcome.

about this course:

Join me on my skills building course.

I have designed this course to introduce you to what is known as the ‘Formal elements of Art’. Line, shape, perspective, form, tone, texture, colour and composition. The formal elements are the skills used by artists when creating art.

Each week we will create a piece of art that uses two or more of the formal elements and by the end of the course you will have been taught the basic principles and understanding of each formal element.

The word ‘Formal’ sounds dry and boring but it is my mission to make this course fun & creative. Providing you with a solid grounding in the fundamentals of drawing and painting. These skills will help enable you to move forward & create your own art independently.

A bit about me – I am a fully qualified lecturer in Art & Design and hold a BA Hons & PGCE.
I have been teaching students for over 20 years. It is my passion to encourage and support people to believe in themselves whilst showing them the skills & techniques to reach their own creative potential.

You can see examples of my classes on my Facebook page.

about this course:

The course will provide a comprehensive study of Viking colonisation and settlement of the Isle of Man, incorporating the Viking Age commencing circa AD 800, through to the end of the Late Norse Kingdom of Man & the Isles, circa 1270. This is a particularly profuse and enlightening period in the Island's historic past, and one that we shall examine through a kaleidoscope of archaeological heritage in the form of pagan burial sites, Manx stone crosses, coin hoards, settlement sites, fortifications (St. Patrick's Isle, Castle Rushen) buildings/structures, seats of Parliament (Tynwald Hill) and place names. This record is complimented by material from the written historical archive and we shall consider the various sources. By the end of the course the student should have gained a greater awareness of the unique legacy that the Vikings have left us, one that has marked our Island with an enduring sense of national identity. The student will also learn to locate particular Viking sites within their landscape setting, and how the interaction between the incoming settlers and indigenous population was played out. A further learning outcome should be an understanding of how the Isle of Man cannot be viewed in historical isolation, but must be located and understood within a wider context of Viking incursion into other parts of the British Isles. Finally, the course should stimulate the student's desire to view the magnificent array of artefacts on display in the Manx Museum's Viking Gallery.

Discover how several thousand Germans and Austrians came to be living in Britain during the 1910s and 1930s and how they were then labelled as 'enemy aliens' (and potential spies) during the First and Second World Wars. During the First World War, discover how more than 20,000 Germans and Austrians were ‘living with the wire’ at Douglas Camp (a requisitioned holiday camp) and Knockaloe Camp (a large purpose-built camp) . Find out more about who the internees were, what their lives were like in the camps and how their tackled one of their main enemies – boredom – and how they tried to keep themselves occupied.
During the Second World War, discover during the summer of 1940, as the rest of Britain prepared itself for invasion, the Isle of Man became the centre for several civilian internment camps. Discover more about how Jewish and political refugees fleeing Nazi persecution found themselves arrested as ‘enemy aliens’ and then interned behind barbed wire on the Isle of Man.
