Extended Certificate in Health & Social Care (BTEC Level 2 NQF)

What is the Course About?

This course provides a broad and practical introduction to the health and social care sector. It is equivalent to three GCSEs and is ideal for learners who want to explore careers in care or progress to more advanced study.

Throughout the year, you will gain valuable knowledge of how health and social care services operate, while developing the skills needed to support individuals of all ages. You’ll also complete First Aid and Food Hygiene training, giving you recognised certificates that strengthen your future prospects.

A key part of the course is work-based learning. You will spend at least one day per week on placement in a real health or social care setting, helping you develop confidence, practical experience and insight into the working world.

The qualification contains four core units:

• Human Lifespan Development (externally assessed)

• Health and Social Care Values

• Effective Communication in Health and Social Care

• Healthy Living (externally assessed)

You will also complete six optional specialist units. These broaden your understanding of wellbeing, care practices and professional responsibilities, while strengthening your ability to apply skills in practical, vocational contexts.

Will I need a DBS check for this course?

No, you won’t need a DBS check.

Will I need any specific resources, uniform and/or kit?

No, you won’t need any specific uniform or kit.

What are the days and hours of the course?

Your timetable will be confirmed during Induction in September, but you can expect approximately 14 hours of time in the classroom each week.

Will I undertake work placement as part of the course?

No, however you will have lots of opportunities to build employability skills, and your lecturers have worked in the industry, which means you will benefit from their experience.

What are my progression and career options?

This qualification prepares you for:

• Work in the health and social care sector

• Further study at Level 3

It’s an ideal stepping stone for those who want to develop their career in care, nursing, social work or support services.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment includes:

• Two externally assessed units

• Multiple internally assessed units using:

- Role play

- Practical demonstrations

- Verbal presentations

- Written assignments

Each unit is individually graded, and points are combined to determine your final overall grade.

Entry requirements

Three GCSEs at D or above, including English and/or Maths.
