University College Isle of Man (UCM) recorded that 50% of visitors to its Digital Enterprise Department at this year’s open evening were female, highlighting the growth of women in tech.
Over the last few years UCM has seen a gradual change of more female students joining IT courses but this year’s level of interest was significant. Within the sector the university college offers courses from entry level qualifications (at the same level of A-levels) to degrees and masters.
Dr Michael Ulyatt, Head of Faculty for Digital Enterprise, said: “This year, we noticed a significant increase in females expressing an interest in studying a computing related course with us. It’s always exciting to see how the industry is growing and changing, and at UCM, the courses and qualifications we offer are always changing to ensure our students have the skills and knowledge they need for when they enter the workplace.”
“Over the last few years, we’ve noticed a shift in more women in the industry overall and it’s great to see more interest from female students in a traditionally male-dominated sector.”
The event, which was held on 23rd November, saw visitors interested in courses across all levels including Further and Higher Education, Apprenticeships and Leisure courses attend, and is one of many events UCM hosts throughout the year to help students choose their next step in education.
In addition to finding out about individual courses attendees could take part in hands-on activities such as VR experiences, drone flying, remote programming, go-kart racing, cookie decorating and science experiments.
