From UCM to Midwifery: Niamh Quayle’s Journey

Former University College Isle of Man (UCM) student, Niamh Quayle, has always known she wanted to become a nurse, and choosing to study Level 3 Health & Social Care at UCM enabled her to focus entirely on her passion rather than juggling multiple A-level subjects at sixth form.

“I've always had an interest in nursing, and this course has been the perfect pathway for me to focus solely on my future career. I'm excited to continue my learning at uni and continue working towards becoming a fully qualified nurse”.

During her time at UCM, Niamh gained hands-on experience through placements in the maternity ward, oncology day unit and with the paediatric physiotherapy team, which provided her with unique insights into different areas of nursing. This practical exposure reinforced her career aspirations.

“I had multiple placement opportunities, which really helped me to understand what it’s like to work in a hospital setting and figure out what I enjoy. I really liked being on the maternity ward and now know that midwifery is definitely for me”.

At UCM, students are trusted to manage their own time and take the lead in their learning, and as an independent learner, Niamh thrived in this flexible environment.

“I don’t think I fully anticipated how much responsibility you're trusted with at college, but for me personally, I have always been quite independent in my learning, so it really encouraged me to take control of my studies and prepare me for what University is like”.

After completing her course, Niamh stepped out of her comfort zone and spent a summer in America working as a counsellor for the Camp America programme. Knowing she had busy years ahead with nursing placements, she made the most of her time by embracing new challenges abroad.

“I had the BEST time in America, and as much as I love the Island, I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to experience what it’s like to live and work somewhere different. It’s given me a confidence boost and I’m excited to get stuck in with my nursing studies in the UK.”

Now well on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a nurse, Niamh is studying BSc (Hons) Nursing at Edge Hill University, and we wish her all the best on her journey!
